Strengthening International Academic Collaboration through Visits to Beijing Language and Culture University and Exploring Healthcare Innovation at Peking University Hospital of Stomatology
Students explored neuroscience research and advanced oral healthcare while strengthening international academic collaboration in Beijing.
Beijing, China (16 July 2026) — Students participating in Universitas Airlangga’s KKN-BBK 8 International 2026 Program Group 1 visited Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and Peking University Hospital of Stomatology as part of an international academic exchange designed to strengthen interdisciplinary learning, research collaboration, and global perspectives in higher education. The programme introduced participants to advances in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and oral healthcare while fostering academic partnerships between Indonesian and Chinese institutions.

The academic programme began with a visit to the BLCU History Museum, where students learned about the university’s development, international education initiatives, and its role in promoting Chinese language and intercultural communication (本馆简介-北京语言大学档案馆校史馆, no date). This was followed by a research sharing session by Master’s student Mr. Cao Yuwei, who presented his work in neurolinguistics, demonstrating how neuroscience and linguistics are integrated to investigate language processing in the human brain.
“Neurolinguistics allows us to see, quite literally, how the brain processes language in real time. By combining neuroscience methods with linguistic theory, we can better understand not just what people say, but how their brains make that possible,” said Mr. Cao Yuwei.
Participants subsequently toured several research laboratories, including the Eye-Tracking Laboratory, Electroencephalography (EEG) Laboratory, Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) Laboratory, Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Laboratory, and Psychological Counselling Laboratory, where they observed advanced technologies used to study cognition, language, emotion, and human behaviour.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited Peking University Hospital of Stomatology, one of China’s leading dental teaching hospitals, to explore the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The department comprises 243 healthcare professionals, including 64 physicians, 158 nurses, 21 postdoctoral researchers, and five technical staff, and performs approximately 8,000 surgical procedures annually (医院简介-北京大学口腔医院, no date) (北京大学口腔医学院, no date). Students learned about multidisciplinary management of cleft lip and palate, craniofacial deformities, temporomandibular joint disorders, oral oncology, reconstructive surgery, speech rehabilitation, and swallowing therapy. The hospital also showcased its integration of advanced digital technologies, including artificial intelligence-assisted surgical planning, three-dimensional modelling, surgical guide design, and robotic-assisted surgery, to improve surgical precision and patient outcomes. During the clinical visit, participants observed the assessment of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) using nasopharyngoscopy, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary rehabilitation in restoring patients’ speech and quality of life.
The visit demonstrated how international academic collaboration enables students to learn from cutting-edge research and clinical innovation while strengthening global partnerships in education and healthcare. The programme supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting advanced healthcare and rehabilitation, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential international learning, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering collaboration between Universitas Airlangga, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Peking University Hospital of Stomatology
